Group Travel on the Solstice

Caribbean - 4/2011

I took 129 people on the Solstice, April 3-10 to the Caribbean.  Overall, the ship was fabulous. I do believe they could have been more attentive to our group needs onboard the ship. Otherwise, everyone was very happy!

The Celebrity Solstice is a beautiful ship and the Solstice class is definitely a perfect choice for clients.   The accomodations, specialty restaurants, entertainment, and layout of the ship are perfect.

Pros: Specialty Restaurants, cabins, embarkation and disembarkation

Cons: Group assistance onboard could have been better

Celebrity Solstice exceeded my expectations!

- 1/2010

I honestly did not know how I would enjoy sailing on what I consider to be a "big ship".  Solstice exceeded my expectations.  The ship is simply beautiful.  The public spaces, restaurants...are stunning.  There is a casual elegance that makes one feel instantly at home and "happy."  The ship is configured in such a manner that one does not feel as if one is on a megaship...there are so many intimate spaces.  I loved sitting at the martini bar each night before dinner.  The bartenders delighted the bars guests with all sorts of antics--twirling shakers--and mixing up all sorts of tasty adult beverages!  The food was excellent--high quality--and served with style and grace. Loved the different dining options. The staterooms are well appointed--room stewards did an excellent job during the entire cruise.  Activities were varied.  Something for everyone.  Great for extended families, couples, honeymooners.   The truth of the matter is that I would recommend this ship to my most discerning clients--those which prefer Crystal and Regent...would be delighted traveling aboard this fantastic ship.

Pros: excellent food, well appointed staterooms, something for everyone

Solstice is truly a beautiful ship

- 1/2010

If you want an exciting experience take the Celebrity Solstice with 5 of your best girl friends as I did or with your family as this ship has something wonderful for everyone.

The Celebrity Solstice is truly a beautiful ship. It is modern, open and the accommodations are among the best at sea. The standard stateroom is huge and the suites are so large on could live aboard indefinitely.

On this beautiful ship are several restaurants in addition to the dining room. The Bistro at 5 was our favorite spot for both lunch and late night desserts. The salads were wonderful, fresh and tasty as were their Panini's. And the desserts - WOW. The Tuscan Grille was truly a 5 star restaurant and an awesome dining experience. It is appointed beautifully and the chef frequently stopped by the table to ensure our satisfaction with evening faire.

If you like sushi or Asian, Silk Harvest is the place for you. It is a wonderful mix of tranquility and Asian style.

The Solstice staff was excellent. Aside from being warm and friendly they were knowledgeable and helpful. There are hostesses for the suites, as well as butlers.

The Solstice also has a fully beauty salon, gym and spa. Special spa cuisine is available for those that book their spa program.  The massages were wonderful and left you feeling pampered and relaxed.

While taking a cruise is usually a great vacation, the solstice class insures the "Best of the Best". No matter what you want in a vacation, solstice class has something to offer everyone from the experienced traveler to the young and old alike - and if you just need to get away - this is the vactation for you, a total relaxing and pampering experience as you see the world.

Pros: large suites, excellent staff, beautiful ship

The most important thing on all cruise ships is the food and Celebrity's Solstice did not disappoint

- /

I was extremely impressed by the dining experience in the main dining room. There is no doubt that Celebrity has raised the bar when it comes to dining in the elegant Grand Epernay Dining Room.

The choice and variety of entree selections were excellent and having dined in the main dining venue, five nights out of the seven night cruise; there were virtually no duplications of entrees.

The presentation of the food was beautiful, creative and most importantly hot and delicious. The staff was attentive, friendly and anxious to please.

I had the opportunity to dine in the beautiful Tuscan Grill. The Tuscan Grill is one of the most beautifully decorated dining rooms and upon entering you get the feeling you are in Tuscany! The specialty restaurants do pride themselves on trying to be as authentic in menu selection. Although I ordered a filet mignon, it was served on a bed of spinach with specialty potatoes. I also ordered a side dish of pasta bouglouiaze with Kobe meatballs. No Italian meal would be complete without hot, home made bread.  I started the meal with a delicious fresh mozzarella and caprice salad. To finish, I ordered my favorite dessert, Tiramisu. It was good, but not special.

The Silk Harvest Restaurant, which features Asian decor and menu, was a nice evening but did not offer any original selections to make it an outstanding evening to remember. I did order sea bass and the presentation of the platter was beautiful, but disappointing to the pallet.

Both restaurants require advance reservations as they are popular and in demand by the guests. Overbooking can be an issue as this may cause less than attentive service.

The food in the Ocean View Cafe was delicious, fresh and better variety than other ships I have sailed on. The dishes were replenished continually. The layout of the Ocean view cafe is one of the best designed on any ship both for table layout and food stations. The salad bar was refreshed constantly as well as the pasta station. Staff was attentive and polite.

Celebrity Century

Western Caribbean - 2/2010

Over all I had a pleasent experience on the ship, the food for the most part was great and the entertainment was very good. They can make a few improvments. Small ship, not as grand as some of the larger vessles.

I went on a cruise with the Celebrity Century from Feb 6th -11th 2010. I stayed in an inside stateroom on the 8th floor. I have been on several other cruises and my overall impression of this ship and the cruise was that it was very good and enjoyable but they could make several improvements. I'm 26-years-old and already my husband and I are planning our next cruise probably with Royal Caribbean, Cunard or Carnival.

The Century sink in the bathroom was very shallow; when you turn on the tap to a certain pressure, the water overflows the tiny sink all over the counter and the floor.

The stateroom attendants were very polite and friendly always asking us how our day was and even remembering my husband by name. They promptly cleaned our room and replaced our towels, water and ice.

It was an excellent touch to give the guests a glass of champagne upon entering the ship and entering the theater on formal night. It was also nice to have complimentary Celebrity tote bags in each stateroom as it made a nice souvenir.

The lunch buffet was good. I liked that they offered a variety of cultural foods. Dinner in the Grand restaurant was pleasant; our waiter, Xavier, and our assistant waitress, Marsha, were exceptional and were extremely accommodating when I made small changes to the menu options.

When we arrived the first day, the deck chairs were dusty and stained. It would have been a good idea if they cleaned them off. I had to clean one myself in order to sit on it. Since it is a smaller ship, there are a lot of people on the deck in the days and it is a bit crowded for space and chairs. They should have also had more deck chairs with the cushion covering as some of the deck chairs were warped making it uncomfortable to sit on. On some other ships I have been on, they had a nice movie screen on the upper deck resembling a drive-in and it was nice to sit out and watch movies. The Century had a small theater that played the same movie twice a day. I thought that they could have played more of a variety of movies. The deck area was rather deserted in the nights. There was not much going on out there even when the weather was great.

The entertainment was fantastic. The shows were very enjoyable and the entertainers were great. They did a show called "A Touch of Broadway" which was very good. the comedian was great, and the acrobats were very good.

The DJ at the disco played the same music over and over again each night and the bands were okay but performed very old music. For the younger people who made it to the club at night, it would have been nice to hear some up-to-date more popular music.

They did not provide irons, and there was no laundry facility where you could iron your clothes. They charged to iron your shirt for you. It wasnÂ’t much but I think an iron is standard in most hotels these days free of charge.

They could have provided more variety in the onboard activities but they did have a cooking show competition between the chefs where they set up full kitchens on the stage in the theater which I thought was entertaining.

The people who handled our luggage did a good job getting it to our room promptly but they should have taken more care delivering the right luggage to the right room as one of our bags was placed at the wrong room and we had to go look for it. They should have taken more care with the bag as one of our cases was damaged.

I thought that, although lunch and dinner were good, breakfast was not that great. I found the food to be very bland, the same thing every day cooked poorly.

Some of the staff werenÂ’t that friendly There is a good amount of storage space in the rooms The ship is very clean and well maintained They had ice sculptures which they poured drinks down to cool them which I thought was creative There was always fresh cool towels and drinks awaiting us when we were getting back on board from each port which was a nice touch.
The pizza was horrible. The dough was hard, not crisp, but tough and chewy and not very tasty. On top of that, it closed at 1:00a.m. where many ships have the pizzeria open 24 hours. In fact, everything seemed to close early on this ship including the pools and hot tubs.

The ship also had these metal raised portions in the floor that I think should be covered with carpet. Many people wear flip flops or sandals and, if you miss that, you could do serious damage to your feet. Also there are ramp portions in the hallway that are covered in carpet so you can not distinguish where they are from the rest of the hallway and I, along with the rest of my party, tripped up these ramps several times in the hallway.

While I was there, a few more stations were added to the TV but only for people who were apart of the Captain's Club.  I think all guests could have used more stations in their rooms.

Overall, it was a good experience. I like going above and beyond on my vacations and making them as luxurious as possible before I return to reality, thus I prefer the larger ships that are more grand than the Century is. The older people aboard prefer the smaller ship as they told me it was easier for them to get around. But it seemed that the ship being smaller made the effects of the wind and the choppy water seem magnified and there were a lot of seasick people, including myself, for an entire night and the entire next day.

I would recommend this ship to others. Overall, it was good and every cruise line or ship can have its pros and cons. Hope this review helps.

Happy sailing everyone!

Pros: Great food, great shows

Cons: dirty deck chairs, pizza bar was horrible, breakfast could use improvment

Century revitalized !

Europe - 6/2006

Celebrity is the cruise line we keep going back to (5 cruises) because the staff are attentive and the facilities are great - Century is now even better, and well up to the standard one would expect of a 5-star cruise line. We will be back!

Just got back from a short trip (four days) on the new revitalized Century. With 55 million dollars spent, a very good ship (twice sailed on her before) is now a great ship. At first it's hard to see what has been changed on the outside because it looks the same. Then you realize that 300 new balconies have been added that were not there before. "How can you miss them?" I asked my wife. But that sums up the changes. They are so very well done you just do not notice them until you compare what was there before. On the inside all the rooms (we had 9126, 9130, 9134 for our short family trip) are completely refurbished, new bathrooms with modern fittings and new lighting, new furniture and carpets, new beds and bedding and big flat screen TVs that offer so many services! But, boy is it hard to change channels to watch TV. The new "Murano" specialty restaurant is very good with fantastic views across the ocean, but a bit on the small side with only about 15 tables. My (grown up) family loved the AquaSpa onboard Century. It was completely new and there were 101 ways to spend lots of money – and we did. Some things never change, like the cruise director's jokes! But the new ice bar was fantastic. What a great concept, and what a great place to unwind. It replaced the old Sports Bar, so there is nowhere to watch sports now, or if there was I did not find it. The completely refurbished Ocean Grill is very well laid out and much better. Apart from that, the boat looks the same. So what about the trip? Well, it was Dover, day at sea, Guernsey and back to Dover. It was short but perfectly formed. We choose Celebrity because we like the style and the attentive crew. What we also got was great entertainment and a sunburn. What more could you ask of a cruise?!

Pros: Just out of refit, good staff, great ice bar

Cons: None, Century is now even better.

Century Review

Scandinavia - 6/2006

An excellent cruise line with stellar service. An incredible itinerary on this 12-day Baltic Cruise. I wouldnÂ’t hesitate to use Celebrity, and the Century, again!

By way of introduction, this was my fifth cruise. I’ve been on Costa (20 years ago), Royal Caribbean (11 years ago) and Holland America (two years ago) cruise lines, and all of my comparisons with the Century are based on these other cruises. This was my first cruise on a Celebrity cruise ship. We sailed on the Celebrity Century on June 27, 2006, from Amsterdam on a 12-day Baltic Cruise, on what I believe is the second cruise after the Century’s renovation. The ports of call were: Amsterdam – embarkation Copenhagen, Denmark Helsinki, Finland Stockholm, Sweden St. Petersburg, Russia Tallinn, Estonia Oslo, Norway Amsterdam – debarkation There were three days at sea, and at least six hours at each of the cities, except for St. Petersburg, where we docked overnight. Oh, and for those of you in the planning stages of such a trip, there were three formal nights onboard. Travel to and from: We flew into Amsterdam from California, a long and arduous journey. This travel was not in connection with Celebrity. It took us about five days to recover from the jetlag. Stateroom: We were in the Penthouse category, in an Sky Suite with butler. It’s a fabulous room, much larger than any of the other cabins I’ve stayed in with other lines. Of course, it’s still small by any other yardstick. Our cabin had its own veranda (not exactly private, but pretty private). Whenever I remarked about that guy smoking a cigar on his veranda, two cabins down, I’m sure he heard me. Service to the Stateroom: Superior. There’s no other way to describe it. One joke onboard is that a passenger stepped into his bathroom, and when he stepped back out, his bed was made. That is not terribly far-fetched. If there’s any complaint at all, it’s that our cabin attendant failed to leave us any washcloths one morning, so we called and they delivered four. The Butler: Our suite came with a butler. We never really learned what to do with him. He brought us tea and coffee in the morning when we said we wanted it (we stipulated 7:30 am so that we could make excursions leaving after 8 am), and then canapés and tea in the afternoon. When my roommate was seasick and missed a few meals, he scolded us nicely, and suggested that he could’ve helped by bringing some soup or calling the doctor. He also could’ve made spa appointments for us, I guess, but we ended up doing that on our own. As I said, we never really figured out what to do with him, but what service he gave us was superior. Entertainment onboard: If you like going to the shows onboard, don’t read this part as we never availed ourselves of the opportunities. We didn’t recognize the names and so didn’t go. There is one exception to this: we attended the piano concerts of Arad Avner because we like classicial music, and that was stellar. Activities onboard: The onboard activities were rather like Holland America’s for the most part: fun but low-key things, not a lot for kids that I noticed. 1. There was a nice library filled with travel books and magazines that a lot of people used. 2. Due to the recent renovation, their Celebrity Online room offered computer classes to a limited extent; their classes were primarily about downloading and filing your photos, including beginning and intermediate Photoshop, although you could book private lessons. I don’t know about the private lessons, but the Photoshop classes were $20 each for 45 minutes. 3. There were two culinary demonstrations onboard the ship at Rendezvous Square and I have to say, this was my favorite activity. They actually cooked something in front of you – filet mignon with a nice sauce in the first session, and shrimp in the second session – and gave you a printout with the recipe on it. In the meantime, they had the Master Decorator working on fruit as decorations, and the pastry chef working on sugar or some wonderful dessert in the same sessions. 4. There were various organized and unorganized card and board games going on in the card rooms. 5. The usual art auctions were held during days at sea. 6. They had a wine auction in Michael’s Lounge, plus wine pairings and tastings (for a $10 fee) at the little coffee lounge, Cova Café, on Deck 6. 7. Various trivia games almost every day. 8. Bingo – not as many bingo games as I’ve seen in the past on other cruises, but a nice winner-take-all blackout game that went all the way to the end on our cruise. Internet: In addition to the computer classroom computers, which usually weren’t for Internet use, there were four Internet computer terminals on Deck 6, and four more on Deck 7 next to the classroom. Internet costs were very high: 75 cents a minute if you didn’t get a package (and you had to be instructed on how to get the package, something I missed the first several sessions), or as low as 65 cents a minute with a package. Despite the cost, it was very difficult to find a free terminal. Everybody, it seemed, wanted to send their grandchildren an email, or print out that boarding pass on the last day. Dining: The formal dining room is in the double-decker Grand Restaurant. (No decorations here, which I found strange, unlike the gorgeous Holland America dining rooms.) A nice trio plays during dinner, but you can’t hear them past 10 feet. There was a LOT of noise in this dining room – I found it almost impossible to hear my tablemates. We were seated right next to the captain’s table, on the bottom floor (Deck 5), right next to the aft window – we could see the spectacular sunsets in the second seating. The sun doesn’t set until 10 or 11 pm in the Baltic, so if you want to see the sunset during dinner, get the later seating option. But I found that we missed a lot of entertainment because of the later seating….so make your choice accordingly. The food is superb. I was looking for food that was more to my liking than on Holland America, and I found it. It’s American simple, meaning, fancy enough but recognizable. I loved each and every five-course meal, although for many of them I didn’t select every course. Dining Room Service: Excellent. The iced tea appeared during every meal as I sat down, as I had requested it during the first dinner. We got to know our crew by name (they insist on that!), and they performed extraordinarily. We found the service to be a little less excellent during breakfast and lunch (during one lunch I never received my appetizer), but that’s a small criticism. The Spa: I was disappointed in the spa, mainly because of their very heavy, very aggressive sales tactics. I received a manicure, pedicure, massage. My massage wasn’t as good as I thought it should have been: my shoulders and back went back to pain mode not even a day later – not very deep tissue. The manicure and pedicure was very nicely done. But get ready to endure a 10 to 20-minute sales pitch each and every time, sometimes even during the procedure. It got very tiresome so we didn’t go back. Shore Excursions: Excellent. My roommate has some mobility issues, so we really appreciated the fact that the online version explained how many steps were involved, etc., and took full advantage of their availability by booking all of them online before we flew to Amsterdam. Like the other ships, Celebrity has you meet in certain rooms to get your sticker and directions. This process was normally handled efficiently – and I realize the problems with getting approximately 1500 people off this ship within an hour’s time – but there were some problems, such as certain excursions weren’t called but were being processed, not being able to catch up with the tour leader if you are disabled, etc. We learned to grab the stickers then go down to Deck 3 to disembark BEFORE the tour leader got there. Then we could spot the bus and board the bus by our number. Otherwise, we were the last ones onboard, and the mobility-challenged have to walk to the back of the bus for any seating. The Itinerary: Incredible!!! So many ports of call on this cruise, so much to see, and yet it allowed us to compare all the Scandinavian countries with each other (and they’re all different!), as well as look at their history with each other and Russia/the Soviet Union. St. Petersburg was just fascinating, as you can well imagine, some years after the Soviet break-up. And the weather during the summer was just fabulous – mostly 70’s to low 80’s.

Pros: The itinerary was spectacular; the service was stellar.

Cons: Limited hours for the Islands cafe; pedestrian activities onboard.
