Group Travel on the Solstice
Caribbean - 4/2011
I took 129 people on the Solstice, April 3-10 to the Caribbean. Overall, the ship was fabulous. I do believe they could have been more attentive to our group needs onboard the ship. Otherwise, everyone was very happy!
The Celebrity Solstice is a beautiful ship and the Solstice class is definitely a perfect choice for clients. The accomodations, specialty restaurants, entertainment, and layout of the ship are perfect.
Pros: Specialty Restaurants, cabins, embarkation and disembarkation
Cons: Group assistance onboard could have been better

Celebrity Solstice exceeded my expectations!
- 1/2010
I honestly did not know how I would enjoy sailing on what I consider to be a "big ship". Solstice exceeded my expectations. The ship is simply beautiful. The public spaces, restaurants...are stunning. There is a casual elegance that makes one feel instantly at home and "happy." The ship is configured in such a manner that one does not feel as if one is on a megaship...there are so many intimate spaces. I loved sitting at the martini bar each night before dinner. The bartenders delighted the bars guests with all sorts of antics--twirling shakers--and mixing up all sorts of tasty adult beverages! The food was excellent--high quality--and served with style and grace. Loved the different dining options. The staterooms are well appointed--room stewards did an excellent job during the entire cruise. Activities were varied. Something for everyone. Great for extended families, couples, honeymooners. The truth of the matter is that I would recommend this ship to my most discerning clients--those which prefer
Pros: excellent food, well appointed staterooms, something for everyone

Solstice is truly a beautiful ship
- 1/2010
If you want an exciting experience take the Celebrity Solstice with 5 of your best girl friends as I did or with your family as this ship has something wonderful for everyone.
The Celebrity Solstice is truly a beautiful ship. It is modern, open and the accommodations are among the best at sea. The standard stateroom is huge and the suites are so large on could live aboard indefinitely.
On this beautiful ship are several restaurants in addition to the dining room. The Bistro at 5 was our favorite spot for both lunch and late night desserts. The salads were wonderful, fresh and tasty as were their Panini's. And the desserts - WOW. The Tuscan Grille was truly a 5 star restaurant and an awesome dining experience. It is appointed beautifully and the chef frequently stopped by the table to ensure our satisfaction with evening faire.
If you like sushi or Asian, Silk Harvest is the place for you. It is a wonderful mix of tranquility and Asian style.
The Solstice staff was excellent. Aside from being warm and friendly they were knowledgeable and helpful. There are hostesses for the suites, as well as butlers.
The Solstice also has a fully beauty salon, gym and spa. Special spa cuisine is available for those that book their spa program. The massages were wonderful and left you feeling pampered and relaxed.
While taking a cruise is usually a great vacation, the solstice class insures the "Best of the Best". No matter what you want in a vacation, solstice class has something to offer everyone from the experienced traveler to the young and old alike - and if you just need to get away - this is the vactation for you, a total relaxing and pampering experience as you see the world.
Pros: large suites, excellent staff, beautiful ship

The most important thing on all cruise ships is the food and Celebrity's Solstice did not disappoint
- /
I was extremely impressed by the dining experience in the main dining room. There is no doubt that Celebrity has raised the bar when it comes to dining in the elegant Grand Epernay Dining Room.
The choice and variety of entree selections were excellent and having dined in the main dining venue, five nights out of the seven night cruise; there were virtually no duplications of entrees.
The presentation of the food was beautiful, creative and most importantly hot and delicious. The staff was attentive, friendly and anxious to please.
I had the opportunity to dine in the beautiful Tuscan Grill. The Tuscan Grill is one of the most beautifully decorated dining rooms and upon entering you get the feeling you are in Tuscany! The specialty restaurants do pride themselves on trying to be as authentic in menu selection. Although I ordered a filet mignon, it was served on a bed of spinach with specialty potatoes. I also ordered a side dish of pasta bouglouiaze with Kobe meatballs. No Italian meal would be complete without hot, home made bread. I started the meal with a delicious fresh mozzarella and caprice salad. To finish, I ordered my favorite dessert, Tiramisu. It was good, but not special.
The Silk Harvest Restaurant, which features Asian decor and menu, was a nice evening but did not offer any original selections to make it an outstanding evening to remember. I did order sea bass and the presentation of the platter was beautiful, but disappointing to the pallet.
Both restaurants require advance reservations as they are popular and in demand by the guests. Overbooking can be an issue as this may cause less than attentive service.
The food in the Ocean View Cafe was delicious, fresh and better variety than other ships I have sailed on. The dishes were replenished continually. The layout of the Ocean view cafe is one of the best designed on any ship both for table layout and food stations. The salad bar was refreshed constantly as well as the pasta station. Staff was attentive and polite.

Why I Sail Celebrity
Southern Caribbean - 1/2011
I know that people sail for as many reasons as there are ships and cruise lines. They have been reviewed extensively on excellent websites like this one, so there's no need for me to repeat them. Your budget, the time of year, the size of ship, the length of cruise, the location of your cabin, your destination and the reputation of the cruise line all factor in to how and where you will choose to spend your vacation dollars.
So with that preface I am pleased to sing the praises of Celebrity's Constellation, a ship I have sailed on five times. A sixth two-week cruise is planned for January 2012.
The Constellation is the newest of Celebrity's Millennium class, and with about 2,000 passengers is considered a "small large" ship in today's market. The four Millennium-class ships, including the Constellation, are smaller than Celebrity's newer Solstice-class ships, which carry close to 3,000 passengers. Even the Solstice-class ships are dwarfed by some of the leviathans being
launched by the competition at Royal Caribbean, NCL and Princess. But as we hear throughout life, size does matter and bigger does not always mean better. It really depends what you're looking for in your vacation.
The larger ships offer more activities and are more crowded and noisy. For example, if you're going away for a week with your kids and are looking to take the kind of busy vacation where you'll need another vacation to relax as soon as you return home, the larger ships are for you. I remember taking those vacations to Disney World with my kids when they were younger. We were constantly on the go and returned home exhausted, but we all had a great time and the delight we gave our kids is a memory we cherish. We hope to create new and similar memories on vacations with our grandkids.
But our cruises on board the Constellation have just been my wife and I, joined by good friends our age from Florida we had met on that very ship. Another lovely couple from as far away as Scotland we had also met on board have joined us for our last two cruises. One of the great pleasures of cruising is to meet people from all walks of life. While many acquaintances on board,
though pleasant and friendly are passing and fleeting, others are lasting. One friend I still stay in touch with from a 1983 Holland America cruise my wife and I took to celebrate our tenth wedding anniversary; several others from more recent cruises over the years are on my e-mail list and we "speak" constantly.
Last year the Constellation, which first set sail in 2002, underwent extensive renovations; the three remaining Millennium-class
ships are likewise scheduled for similar facelifts. The cabins were re-done and new shipboard venues have been added. You can find them featured on Celebrity's website. A few new "specialty" restaurants were added, and our beloved Martini Bar was relocated from Deck 5 aft to Deck 4 mid-ship around the majestic atrium, trading its former intimacy for a vibrant activity. All in all, it's a beautiful ship, but so are most of the ships in the mass cruise market, so let me share with you why I think Celebrity is
extraordinary.
This first reason may seem odd to some, but for those of you who find smoking both noxious and obnoxious, Celebrity's non-smoking policy is the most aggressive and progressive in the industry. Most cruise lines ban smoking in the restaurants and cabins, but I believe that Celebrity is the only cruise line in the mass market to ban smoking on the cabin balconies and in the
casinos. Years ago, before the ban, I was bothered on my balcony by smoking on an adjacent balcony. So after the cruise, I (and I imagine, other like-minded passengers) wrote a blistering letter to Celebrity complaining that I paid extra for a balcony cabin I couldn't enjoy. Guess what: Celebrity listened. In addition, my wife likes to gamble in the casino and I like to watch her, but the
smoke in the casino was too thick to tolerate, so guess what again? The casinos on board Celebrity's ships, like the cabin balconies, are now also smoke-free. For passengers like me, a smoke-free atmosphere can make or break a vacation,
because, even excluding the all-important health concerns, I can't enjoy myself if I can't breathe in comfort. So Celebrity has earned my business for that reason alone.
But there are other reasons to consider. In the highly subjective area of cruise entertainment, on our most recent Constellation sailing my wife never missed a show in the theater (although I did), and while Perry Grant, the flamboyant cabaret singer, is not my cup of tea, he is a popular institution on board the Constellation and I have known passengers to choose this ship just because he performs nightly in Michael's Club.
Furthermore, in my experience in the mass cruise market, Celebrity offers the finest cuisine and service for the money. I have found the food in the magnificent dining room so good (a few years ago Celebrity changed chefs and menus) that eating in the for-fee specialty restaurants seemed superfluous (although I admit that the "show" of superlative service and individual attention surpassing even the dining room in those specialty restaurants makes for a memorable evening). As for the staff, from the customer service folks at the front desk to the waiters and cabin stewards you meet and greet each day, it's hard to imagine more personable or solicitous people, who all work hard and long hours, week after week, cruise after cruise, for the sole purpose to make our vacations special. Unlike most of us in our jobs, they are never entitled to have a "bad" day, be in a bad mood or have the proverbial headache, which should make us appreciate their exceptional service all the more.
So in closing, consider this brief anecdote from our January 2011 cruise which best sums up why I sail Celebrity: Sunday was our first full day at sea after our sailaway late Saturday afternoon. I'm an early riser and was up on a very quiet and peaceful pool deck at about 7:30 a.m. with a nice cup of coffee and my book. My wife usually joins me for breakfast later. Anyway, a pool deck hand, who since our Constellation cruise the year before had seen literally tens of thousands of passengers come and go, walks by me and without stopping or missing a beat, shoots me a big smile and says: "Welcome back."

Ultimate Caribbean
Caribbean - 11/2006
Now having cruised for eleven nights, we'll never go back to 7-night cruises. They're just not long enough.
My wife and I are veteran cruisers and a very young age 55 and 57. We exercise vigorously every day and look it. She's a personal shopper for an upscale clothing boutique and I'm a trial lawyer. We live in suburban Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. We're busy people with an active lifestyle, and enjoy cruising mainly to relax and re-charge our batteries. Our November 2006 cruise on board Celebrity's Constellation was our first on a Millennium-class ship and our first cruise longer than seven nights.
The Constellation is, in a word, magnificent. Gas-turbine engines, exclusive to Celebrity's Millennium-class, eliminate the shuddering felt on diesel-powered ships. Sparkling clean (sanitary dispensers are everywhere to help prevent a Norwalk virus outbreak). Beautifully decorated. Easy to find your way around. Hardly any congestion for such a large ship. Very friendly staff. The excellent service and good food that Celebrity cruisers have come to expect.
Our cruise left from Fort Lauderdale, Florida. Celebrity has the embarkation process down to a science, and we were on board about 30 minutes after arriving at the terminal.
A few highlights and suggestions to share with you. Our cabin was on Deck 7 with a veranda. A mid-ship location helps to reduce rocking and rolling. The veranda cabins are worth the money. I spent hours on the veranda reading or just enjoying the sea. There was sufficient space for storage in the cabin, and we came with four large fully-loaded bags. I believe that my wife packed a change of clothes for every possible occasion, including a change of clothes for when she was changing clothes. There was still room for everything in our cabin. Bring a clock, though, because except for a digital time read-out on the telephone, there is not one in the cabins. The bathrooms are also adequate in size with an excellent shower.
The entertainment was standard for most cruise ships, including the nightly shows in the theatre. This is not meant as a criticism, since the shows in the highly-competitive cruise industry are generally good. The theatre, by the way, was the best designed we've seen on any ship, with almost no obstructed sight lines. The Constellation is also distinguished by an outstanding Cirque du Soleil show that brought the audience to its feet, cheering. It was one of the best shows I've seen anywhere, on or off ship. I believe that the Cirque show is offered on only one other Millennium-class ship and is a Celebrity exclusive.
Unlike Holland America's Vista-class ships, which are similar in size to Celebrity's Millennium-class, there is plenty of shade by the pools. An exercise track on Deck 11 was a wonderful alternative to the treadmills in the gym at the front of the ship, and provided breathtaking views of the sea and ports. In the evenings before our second-seating dinner, we met with friends for a drink in the Martini Bar, just outside the second level of the dining room. The center of the Martini Bar is open to provide a balcony of sorts to the Rendezvous Bar below. By the second night, the bar staff already knew us by name.
I've seen other reviewers rave over the ship's atrium, which you can visit on a Virtual Tour on the Celebrity website. It is spectacular. The glass-enclosed elevators located mid-ship on the port side I was told were innovated by Celebrity. Also, in the buffet restaurant on the pool deck, sections of the dining room extend over the sea and there are glass-panels in the floor for a remarkable view. The casino is bouncing with noise and light, with friendly and funny blackjack dealers.
We were lucky to be seated in the dining room at the foot of the grand staircase with a waiter from India named Mennino, of Portuguese descent. Mr. Mennino epitomized the courteous, professional, expert white-glove service that has earned Celebrity its superior reputation. Chairs were held for us, napkins were placed on our laps, every menu was explained and recommendations were made for our dining pleasure. Despite being extremely busy and working ridiculously long hours, Mennino always found time to stop and chat, with the warmest smile and eyes. No request was too outlandish or unreasonable. Some members of our table dined once in the ship's "specialty restaurant" during the cruise, although my wife and I found the items on the menu there a little too fancy (read "phony") for our tastes. The praise for the specialty restaurant was not so much for the food as for the service, where you could sit and dine for hours. For us, that meant missing a show after dinner or cutting into valuable casino time, which did not justify the expense of $60 per couple.
Most of the ports we had visited before. Grand Cayman, Aruba and Cozumel are all tourist-friendly and are very good for shopping. (By the way, there are also beautiful and plentiful shops on board ship.) The port in Panama was dreary but we took a cab from the pier for a 15-minute drive to the fascinating Canal. It's not known as the "eighth wonder of the world" by accident. The port in Costa Rica was dirty and dangerous, and safe only if you're leaving the ship on a shore-excursion bus. I believe that for next year's cruise it's been replaced by another port.
Some other interesting features which we did not take advantage of: a large spa in an expansive glass-enclosed area on the pool deck that also offered a "lite" buffet, an acupuncture center, an Internet center, a two-deck library, and a "conservatory" filled with flowers.
All right, I've rambled on enough already, so let's cut to the chase. Now having cruised for eleven nights, we'll never go back to 7-night cruises. They're just not long enough. And you'll agree that once you treat yourself to a veranda cabin, you won't settle for anything less. It was our best vacation to date and I recommend this ship without reservation or hesitation.
Pros: Very friendly staff, excellent service and good food that Celebrity cruisers have come to expect.
Cons: The port in Costa Rica was dirty and dangerous, and safe only if you're leaving the ship on a shore-excursion bus.
