Celebrity Soltice sailing

cruise to nowhere - 11/2008

The Celebrity Soltice is a classy lady

I just recenlty returned from a cruise aboard the Celebrity Soltice sailing from Ft. Lauderdale.

The Soltice is very impressive when you approach her berthed in Port Everglades with all the balconies.
Note, for those of you that do not know, Celebrity no longer
allows smoking in the cabins or on the verandahs.
Smoking is only allowed in the Penny Slot machine area in the casino, Deck 12 pool area Portside only and on Deck 13 above the pool area. If you are not in those areas don't smoke.

We arrived at the Port approximately 12PM and Boarding went very smooothly.  But there is a major incline from the Terminal to the ship. Anyone bringing carry-on luggage or even wheeled luggage will be exhausted by the time they reach the deck.   When we entered the ship we were advised cabins were not going to be available until 2PM.
I asked if we could drop off the luggage in the cabin and
immediately a young man appeared with white gloves and
took the luggage I had been transporting and showed us to our cabin.   Our cabin was a 2C on deck 6 and the life boat was directly outside a window. (Could have jumped right in from the verandah, if needed.)

Cabin  seemed much smaller than 192 sq ft which is what shows in the brochure.  (the beds are circular at the end to give more walk room, but still difficult to maneuver luggage around  and closet space would be limited if cruise was longer than 7 nights.)  Bathroom was adequate, but
there was a trick to getting the light on in the bathroom without turning the lights on in the cabin.  Never did master that trick.

The public rooms were from ok to wow.
Starting with the Soltice Theater, Plaza Deck.  Very well designed  with stadium style seating, but it has pillars in areas that block your views.

Grand Epernay Dining Room is located on both Plaza and Promenade Deck has a mixture of Old World charm with Danish modern furniture. We had dinner here the 2nd night and did find it noise level at a peak.

On Promenade Deck the shops on the Boulevard are like being in shops at a 5 Star hotels.  Very impressive.   The Wine Cellar (very nice),  The Fortunes Casino, there was Roulette, Craps, Poker tables,(Texas Hold'em, Black Jack, Caribbean Poker, 3 Card Poker) and the minimum was $5.00 and $10.00 depending on the table, as well as slot machines from .01 to $5.00.  Martini Bar (not as impressive as I thought it would be) Iced over bar area .

The Tuscan Grill - lovely open atmosphere overlooking the stern of the ship.  Murano's small, intimate atmosphere, very nicely appointed.  Before arriving at either of the these restaurants is the charming Ensemble lounge/bar.  Very nicely appointed in creams and purple, very regal. The foyer you pass thru to the Ensemble lounge was very dark with floral wallpaper and the tiles in the floor actually had ants traveling towards the floral arrangements on the wall. (no not real ants)   Micheals Club very European, quiet and intimate.

Going toward mid-ship on the Entertainment Deck we have
Cafe al Bacho and Gelateria, coffees, crepes, a bakery (with the best chocolate chip cookies ever) and the Bistro on Five, a quaint little restaurant.

Also on Entertainment Deck is the Art Gallery, very impressive.   Everywhere on this deck the vases and art pieces were displayed. More shops.

Continuing on an upward spiral we arrive on Resort Deck
which is where we find the Spa.  Very Impressed!
State of the Art equipment, many small private rooms for
massages and treatments.  The Solarium  Pool was very
relaxing and magical with the incense that was permeating throughout the area,  the pool has steps down into the water as well as the standard ladders.  Next to the pool is a fountain that lights up at night and responds to music.  The outside pool area is similar.   If I remember there were 2 Jacuzzi's in the Solarium area and 4 Jacuzzi's in the outdoor pool area. (though when were aboard the only Jacuzzi's available were in the Solarium, others were not ready for use).

Sky Deck forward was the Observation Lounge.  Similar in style to the Viking Crown Lounges on RCCL, but very sterile.  Maybe at night it  would be different, but in day light, not impressive.

Aft on Sky Deck is the Oceanview Cafe.   Very well designed with kiosks set up throughout the area, so there was never a wait.  Except maybe for the Pizza. Just kidding! Good selection, Good service.

Last, but not least we go to the Lawn Club on Deck 15.

Yes, it is truly the real thing, green grass.  Area wasn't really being used other than people taking off there shoes and walking on the grass.

Adjacent to the Lawn Club is the Hot Glass Show.

How very educational and impressive.   Corning Master Glass Blowers did several demonstrations during the 2 days we were onboard.   The first demonstration was the creation of a conch shell.   It took 45 minutes to an hour to create from start to finish.  Another demonstration was a vase,  multi colored showing all the steps involved to get to the final product.

The ship all in all was quite lovely, but I don't think it is for
the guest who wants night life and party atmosphere.

It definitely is for the mature, well traveled guest.
The Penthouse Suite guest might never come out of the suite for the duration of the cruise.   Sooooo impressive.
The bath area was as large as my verandah stateroom and has a seperate walk-in shower and tub. Lovely dining area for at least 6. Private whirlpool on the deck outside the bedroom area was definitely a plus. Very beautifully appointed.

The morning we disembarked breakfast was available in many different areas. Not Continental Breakfast, but the standard buffet for breakfast.
Even the bakery and the Specialty coffee areas were open.

We left the vessel at 930 am and by the time we got to our
car it was 945 am.  We elected not to Park in the Garage  which was around the other side of the Port from Berth 18.

Remember it is important to advise your client, that the incline from the cruise terminal to the deck for which you enter the ship is very steep. Carry as little as possible onboard.   Pulling a suitcase up the incline was a challenge.

I appreciate the opportunity to have sailed on the Soltice. All in all the ship is really quite lovely, but for me it was not a WOW!    In talking with other agents onboard from all over the U.S., as well as Canada and Europe, the consensus was the same.

Pros: Very easy to get around. No hidden corners.

Cons: Boarding the steep incline to the ship.

Millennium

Eastern Caribbean - 2/2007

Still at the top of their game for service.

Millennium still has the best specialty dinning I've had on any cruise ship.  However, they could use a few new itineraries.  It's the same old destinations out of Ft. Lauderdale year after year.  The ship is also showing some wear and tear, such as a few missing tiles around the pool, etc.  Celebrity's service to their passengers is alway the best, as is the entertainment night after night.

Pros: Best specialty dinning and service in all categories

Cons: Itineraries.

Galaxy Panama Canal

- 1/2005

I was fortunate enough to sail on the Galaxy to the Panama Canal. This was a 12 night cruise with stops in Jamaica, Mexico, Grand Cayman Costa Rica and the beautiful Panama Canal.

This was not my first cruise, so as an experienced cruiser I was expecting a lot.  And I got it.  She was marvelous.  Her staterooms were spotless as well as all the public areas. The staff was beyond good.  The ratio is about 2 to 1 and it showed.

The food was very French, which I enjoyed.  The shows in the evenings were above standard.

When I sailed on her she was due for refurbishing but it was hard to complain about minor problems.  The crew kept the ship spotless and were so attentive to your every need.

I have since sailed on two other Celebrity ships but the Galaxy will always be my favorite.

Around Cape Horn on Celebrity's Infinity

- /

Bigger ships ride the waves better in the rough seas around Cape Horn at the tip of South America. Celebrity gives great value for higher end cruising.

We traveled around Cape Horn on Infinity which was one of the larger ships sailing in this destination. A Millennium-class vessel at 91,000 tons she was triple the size of another ship that was shadowing us (that I'd sailed on also in Scandinavia--Norwegian Crown; a nice little but older ship).  You could tell that the Crown was having a rougher time in those waters: her bow would  disappear below the crest of the waves and reappear high above the crest. But then she didn't have the modern stabilizers that most ships of the last 10 years or so have.

On the other hand, our Infinity was riding the waves with only nominal "rocking & rolling" ...it was noticeable, we'd walk in the usual zig zag fashion but I saw no one having trouble with it. After seeing the movies with old sailing ships struggling through these infamous waters, I think I would have been disappointed if we got to Cape Horn and had it smooth as glass!

Infinity is a wonderful ship with fewer than 2000 people on board, she's about 25% larger than ships that carry 30% more people. For people that want a step up, or for high end cruisers who want 90% the cruise value of the top end (in my opinion) for 50% the cost, Celebrity is an incredible value.

Pros: Stable, smooth cruising with excellent features.

Cons: If you like intimate and small; it's nearly intimate but certainly not small.

My Celebrity Cruises Cruise

Southern Caribbean - 1/2010

Although we read reviews of the average age of the cruisers on Celebrity being 50+, myself (46), son (19) and niece (31), we thoroughly enjoyed our cruise (first with Celebrity aboard Celebrity Millennium - Jan. 2010). Well done job to Alexandro (Captain Bingo) - he was hilarious!  Comedian Noodles was super funny, many wonderful friendly staff and, last but not least, to the best band I have heard thus far on a cruise ship......Magnitude!!!.........excellent entertainment provided by them daily. Loved 'em! Our food was delicious in the main dining room, but could have had more selection in the buffet for lunch. Very clean and friendly staff and our stateroom was spotless!

The half-day 4x4 Jeep excursion in Aruba is super and well priced - loved it! The rain forest/zip line in St. Lucia is well worth the money. On our own,  in St. Martin, we found  ATV rentals outside the gates and had a blast wheeling around the whole island for hours for a very reasonable rate. Snorkeling in Grenada was a wonderful experience and well-priced excursion with the ship. The Halo Caves in Curacao was a well-worth excursion, as well. Lots to do and enjoyed it all. No other way to celebrate a birthday! Thanks Celebrity for the great times!

My only complaint: no laundry facilities to wash our own clothes if needed.

Loved Celebrity!

Eastern Caribbean - 3/2008

Well I have to disagree with a previous poster about the Caribbean cruise on Celebrity Millennium. I also went in March and everything was the opposite of what he said.

Well I have to disagree with a previous poster about the Caribbean cruise on Celebrity Millennium. I also went in March and everything was the opposite of what he wrote on his webpage.

We are active cruisers and, for the most part, the food on Celebrity was outstanding.  We have friends who work fulltime on the ship, so there was immaculate attention to detail.  Every night in the Metropolitan Dining Room, we were treated to a variety of appetizers and canapes, compliments of the assistant maitre d', Yusuf.  Each meal in the dining room was savory, appetizing and satisfying.

The food in the Ocean Cafe (their buffet) could use a little more variety, however.  During the afternoon we were forced to choose between pizza, salad and pasta if we were late for the lunch buffet.  Also, late night options were further limited to pasta, pizza and sushi before 9 PM.

We don't really go for the brand of orange juice or for drinking, and you have to remember that they serve 2,000 people every day, so I'm not really picky about the quality of the juice from the dispensers in the cafe.  But the coffee was strong and well-flavored.  I do like their coffee and we had a very attentive assistant waiter who kept my glass full.

You can tell, though, that the cruise industry is making cutbacks.  Half the cruise we couldn't find things as simple as Splenda or ketchup, and again, we were limited in the options for buffet dining.

Activities were constant and non-intrusive.  You could elect to participate or just watch on the sidelines.  I especially enjoyed the War of the Sexes trivia games.

But what really floored me was the entertainment aboard the ship.  I greatly enjoyed the acapella group, and it was nice to know they were very friendly in person.  Also friendly were the Celebrity Singers and Dancers.  I had the great pleasure of meeting several of them in the backstage tour on Friday.

Their production shows were not "high school" quality, as another poster said, because I teach high school choir and I should know what high school talent comprises.  The shows, in my opinion, were definitely professional and above average.  I thought that all five singers were excellent, particularly the soprano, whose name was Barbie.  She had the best range and versatility of all the singers.  I haven't heard a soprano who can sing opera and belt a Broadway number in a long time.  Also of note was Graham, who played everything from the Phantom to Elton John to Figaro/Pagliacci and he was very consistent throughout the cruise.  I didn't much care for the other female singer (I think her name was Jennifer), but only because I felt her range was limited and she wasn't as versatile as the other singers.

[GOOGLE]

The voices weren't weak at all, and their vocal cords were just fine (remember I teach high school choir).  It was the sound technician who couldn't get the voices amplified loud enough to match the orchestra and sometimes the singers had to belt in an ugly voice to be heard. Also, the costumes weren't up to date.

You can put a pretty dress on an ugly woman and she might still be ugly, but you can also put rags on a model without makeup on a bad hair day, and a non-educated viewer might only look at the rags instead of the face.  Such, I think, was the problem with several of the shows.  They need massive updating.  But the talent was superior, far better than I've seen even in the recent stars on Broadway.  (Wicked, Legally Blonde, Spamalot, etc.)

The dancers could have been a little more together in choreography, and the sound technicians weren't very knowledgeable, but you really can't pay someone of stellar quality the salaries they pay to spend six months on a ship.  If you can get above average, then you're doing better than most.  Celebrity really lucked out with their singers and the overall talent of this cast.

The one thing that did disappoint me were the ports of call on this cruise.  While I enjoyed San Juan and St. Thomas, I did not enjoy Casa de Campo at all.  You took your life in your hands if you paid for the shuttle into La Romana, and Altos de Chavon was lovely but was limited in shopping options.  Last I heard they had changed the shuttles to the marina, which has more shopping, and Altos de Chavon.  Just in time for the repositioning.  Seems like a waste of a great day when there are so many islands in that area that could be utilized on this itinerary.

Labadee was also beautiful but if you weren't into sunbathing or ziplining or wave running, there really wasn't much to do except eat a cold hamburger at their lunch barbecue.  We went back to the ship and had a much better lunch.

All in all, I really have to give this cruise a 4-star rating.  There were some things I'd have changed but, thankfully, I got a bargain for my cruise and didn't expect the moon.  Granted, if you go in with high expectations for anything or feel you are important enough to feel entitled to the best, you are bound to be disappointed.  We just went along for the ride and had a great one.

I highly recommend this itinerary for anyone wanting to get away from it all.

Pros: Food was excellent, service outstanding, entertainment exceptional

Cons: Ship is showing age, obvious budget cuts

An Inside View of Millennium

Eastern Caribbean - 2/2008

A great chance to get an inside view of the Celebrity Millennium.

I was contacted in the middle of January and invited to attend a seminar at sea aboard Celebrity Millennium February 3-10. As I had booked a group aboard the ship in the past but had never sailed on a Millennium class vessel in our 35 cruises, and since it was visiting two ports I had not visited, Casa de Campo in the Dominican Republic, and Labadee, the RCCL/Celebrity day location in Haiti, I looked forward to attending. I had to travel alone, as my wife did could not get the time off on short notice.

Flying into Fort Lauderdale, I purchased the Celebrity airport transfers. We picked up luggage at carousel 4, where there was a Celebrity representative, but we were directed to bring our luggage to the carousel 1 area where they were distributing luggage tags and collecting vouchers. The transfer is quick and check-in was reasonably quick. I had only the Xpress Pass for documentation but that was sufficient. As we boarded the ship they distributed red or blue colored champagne depending on whether you declared to be a New England Patriots or NY Giants fan, as it was Super Bowl Sunday. Staff were available to show you to your cabin, if desired. I boarded about 1:30pm and the cabin was ready. Luggage, however, did not arrive until about 5pm, an hour after sailing.

There was a reception for the agents attending the SAS in Michaels Club. Dinner was at assigned tables for the second seating the first night and we “round robin’d" the other nights. They did have a Catholic priest aboard, and had mass each day, including the first evening, a Sunday. The entertainment the first night was a Super Bowl Party in the theater with food and beverages, and TV screens in the Casino.

Day two was a sea day, and the seminar was held from 9am-4pm in a conference room, and they managed to cover all the material Celebrity and Azamara wanted to cover on both sea days. In addition to the brand information and updates, they brought in ship staff from CaptainÂ’s Club, a sommelier, an onboard group coordinator, future cruise sails, spa reps and others as the shipboard schedule permitted to give specific program updates. This was the first formal night, and the evening entertainment was a Broadway-style review at 8:45 and 11pm. 11pm is really too late for a show for those with second dining. I did notice there were ample venues for music and dancing until at least midnight.

Day three I had an opportunity to tour the bridge of the ship, something not normally available anymore. There were only three people manning the bridge on this huge ship, and the senior officer, a woman, was a graduate of a Swiss Maritime Academy. All automated, gps superimposed over navigational charts with radar images added. I also attended a wine tasting in the morning, as we were not arriving in San Juan until 1:30pm. As I had been to San Juan many times and I was traveling alone, I chose to stay aboard and enjoy the Solarium Pool areaÂ….adults only, warm and quiet with glass roofÂ…special padded wooden lounges, and even a healthy food venue that I had not heard promoted. The thelassotherapy pool is terrific, and there are also hot tubs there. The pool is quite warm, but not as warm as a hot tub. As it was Shrove Tuesday, the last night of Mardi Gras, I did leave to walk one block to Senor FrogÂ’s to celebrate Mardi Gras for about 90 minutes before returning for dinner. The entertainment was as singer with shows at 8:45 and 10:50pm.

On day four we arrived in Tortola, BVI, at 7am and berthed at a pierÂ…one of two ships at a pier out of four in port that day. As I had been to Tortola years ago, I did purchase a Celebrity excursion that provided a 25-minute ferry ride to Virgin Gorda, a stop at Savannah Beach for 45 minutes where I snorkeled and saw the largest loggerhead turtle I had ever seen in many years of snorkeling. We then were dropped off at the parking area for The BathsÂ….a beach with giant boulders that at one time many years ago were encased in lava. The lava has long ago been weathered away and only the boulders, on land and in the water, remain. The beach is only accessible by going down s sandy and rock path 350 yards down to the beach, and it seems longer on the way back up! The beach does have a bar and restaurant, and bathrooms available. There is also a path through boulders, running water, and pools that many people crawled through. After the ferry ride back they dropped us not by the pier but several blocks away in the downtown areaÂ….right across the street from PusserÂ’s Rum Store. The rum was a staple of the British Navy and the store and bar has been there for years. It looked the same as it did 15 years ago, and their trademark Painkiller drink with PusserÂ’s rum is still as potent as I remember!

This was Ash Wednesday, the first day of Lent, and Catholic mass and distribution of ashes was available at 5:15pm. They had a 7pm Broadway-style show for the late diners, which I enjoyed. The singers and dancers were excellent. I had forgotten that Celebrity has an “informal” dress night, with jacket required, and this was the evening, so I wore my white dinner jacket over a floral shirt and fit in fine. They had a Tex/Mex salsa dancing and late-night dancing in one of the venues, where I ran into the Celebrity seminar reps and enjoyed some late night conversation with them.

On day five we arrived in Caso de Campo at 9am at a pier. The port authority provides two different bus routes. For $7 they took us to Altos de Chavon, built as a replica of the Italian town the designer was from in Italy. It was filled with restaurants, shops, galleries, and a museum and overlooks the Chavron River gorge. After I returned to the pier, I took the other bus for $5 to Le Marina, a complex of modern shops and restaurants overlooking a marina with very large yachts. There was also a supermarket where I discovered D. R. ground coffee available for the equivalent of $1 for a half pound. The Caso de Campo area is very isolated from the rank and file Dominican. This area is a huge complex of gated communities, expensive homes, and many golf courses. I really would have liked to go into the town of La Romana by taxi or bus, but traveling alone I chose not to do it this time. Just a cultural note: there were baseball fields all over the more industrial area near the port and they were in use all day long. This was the second formal night, and lobster night, preceded by the CaptainÂ’s Club cocktail reception. The show this evening, another stage production, was at 10:50pm.

On day six we arrived in Labadee, Haiti, at 9am, and tender service was provided in large tenders rather than ship’s boats, so they moved people quickly. I went over to snorkel and enjoy the area from 11:30-3:30pm. The view of the verdant green, forested mountains was beautiful. The western half of the island of Hispanola is mountainous, and Labadee is flat peninsula in this area on the northwest coast. The eastern half of the island is flatter, and that is where the Dominican Republic is located. The peninsula at Labadee has five different beach areas, one with ocean surf and the others with calm, bay water. There were ample lounge chairs, a trolley to take people from one end to the other, a flea market with Haitian crafts, and a more conventional shopping market. Food is provided in several venues, but only from 11:30 to 2pm. There were few fish evident while snorkeling, but more small conch shells than I have ever encountered. It was a relaxing day, and I felt that the island was not as cluttered as Princess Cay, and more varied than Half Moon Cay, some of the other “private island” areas. Back on the ship, there was a comedian at 7 and 9pm. It was Island night at the pool deck with a fruit dessert buffet late.

The last day was a sea day with the usual distribution of baggage tags, Customs forms and debarkation instructions. Based on what passengers had indicated on their pre-registration or on a form distributed earlier in the week, they distributed a note giving a specific place and time to meet for individual debarkation of the luggage tag color and number, and there are no announcements calling people away. It is done by walkie talkie by the staff, a pleasant change. I attended an excellent wine and food pairing session, and although I am a wine affectionado, I learned quite a bit. They had samples of chicken, pesto chicken, chocolate, olives, various cheese, and a lemon slice to use when tasting and comparing wines. Excellent session. The shows the last night were at 7pm and 8:45 and were an a capella group, other singers, and an adagio duo. Luggage had to be out by 11pm.

On arrival in Fort Lauderdale, we were asked to be out of cabins by 8am. My debarkation time was 9:25am and was right on time. The luggage, Customs, and transfer to the airport went very smoothly.

My overall thoughts: in conversation with various passengers, they agreed the ship never seems crowded. There are many venues for evening entertainment, music and dancing. The Solarium is outstanding. The Martini Bar and the very talented bartender, Torgi, was very pleasant, and as entertaining as Tom Cruise was in the movie “Cocktail”. Service was excellent, and food was very good, but presentation was not outstanding, just very good. Lobster was large and cooked just right. Omelets and eggs-to-order are available, as are fresh waffles and pancakes. Pizza by the slice is available 11 hours a day, and they will make a pizza to order with your choice of toppings, which takes about 12 minutes. Ice cream is free throughout the day. The staff was very accommodating. My only complaint was that the buffet area was frequently out of glasses, substituting paper cups, some coffee machines were not working, and the mid-afternoon food choices are limited in the buffet area. There is no evening buffet, but there is a reservations-only bistro area set up in the aft end on one side of the buffet area, with linen and glassware and table service. The gratuity is only $2 per person. I’m glad I made the time to check out this ship and the new ports.

Pros: A chance to experience several firsts

Cons: Late night shows

Millennium

Eastern Caribbean - 12/2003

Celebrity Cruises is a mass-market cruise line that has made a steady and determine evolution from premium to luxury, and is delivering a quality of service far above that which is usually considered mass-market.

June 17, 2000, the date Celebrity Cruises’ Millennium made her maiden voyage, must have been a very exciting day for Celebrity as it was the first of four Millennium-class vessels that have come to define a whole new level in cruising, “premium with a taste of luxury.” At 91,000 gross tons and occupancy of 1,950 passengers, the Millennium proves that a premium cruise vacation is not reserved for only those guests aboard the smaller, pricier cruise lines. We cruised aboard the Millennium from December 7th to the 14th, 2003, on a 7-night Eastern Caribbean itinerary roundtrip from Ft. Lauderdale, FL. Ports of call included Casa de Campo, Dominican Republic; San Juan, Puerto Rico; St. Thomas, USVI; and Nassau, Bahamas. The deep blue hull of the four Millennium-class ships is a nice change from the usual white ship hulls and rightly gives an air of distinction to these ships. The Greek Officers aboard the Millennium are lead by Captain Iordanis Adamidis, Master. Unlike some ships on which the captain and officers are seldom seen in the public areas, we observed Captain Adamidis and his officers mingling with the guests and dining at the various onboard venues. We met with Captain Adamidis on the bridge of the Millennium. In 1972, Captain Adamidis joined Chandris Cruises. (The Chandris Group founded Celebrity Cruises in 1989.) He has sailed the majority of Chandris Cruises’ vessels and has been the Master of every Celebrity ship except the Constellation. Aboard the Millennium, special arrangements can be made through the Photo Gallery for guests to pose for a picture with a member of the ship’s personnel of their choice. Winnie Hung, the Social Hostess aboard the Millennium, is an outstanding example of a person in this position. Winnie is an outgoing individual with an abundance of energy. She not only took the time to meet with us personally but also arranged for us to meet with several other staff members and to tour the bridge. Boarding a ship with the capacity of 1,950 passengers can be trying at best but Celebrity Cruises seems to have solved this problem as demonstrated on our October 2003 cruise aboard the Constellation and again on this Millennium cruise. Upon arriving early at the pier in Ft. Lauderdale, we were quickly taken into a seating area to wait for boarding. During the wait, we were very impressed with the Celebrity Cruises’ representatives who moved from person to person assisting with filling out last minute paperwork and answering questions. Their answers were thorough and their explanations clear. Their multilingual talents were also impressive. Following a short wait, we proceeded to the Priority Check-in for Celebrity Captain's Club members. In a matter of minutes, we were checked in and boarded the ship. Once onboard, as with all Celebrity ships, we were greeted with a glass of Champagne (or if you prefer, juice). Staterooms The Millennium has 975 staterooms, 80% with oceanviews and 76% of those oceanview rooms having verandas. We were in a Category 2A veranda stateroom (170 sq. ft. room plus 38 sq. ft. veranda). One entire wall was glass and included a sliding glass door to the veranda. The light colored room furnishings and large window/veranda door gave the room a light airy feeling. The veranda was large enough to accommodate 2 comfortable non-reclining chairs and a small table. At the veranda end of our room was a convertible love seat, oblong coffee table, writing desk/chair with 110/220 electrical outlets, and a large mirror above the desk. The queen size bed that could be converted into two single beds was in the center of the room with nightstands (containing two drawers each and reading lights on each) on either side of the bed. The beds rounded corners at the foot allowed for more useable space between the foot of the bed and the floor to ceiling mirror on the wall at the end of the bed. A built in corner-shelving unit held the 20” interactive television with a small shelf below the TV. The refrigerator/mini-bar (not complimentary) was stored behind a locked wooden door at the bottom of the corner-shelving unit. The stateroom attendant will unlock this for you at the beginning of your cruise. One double closet with numerous wooden hangers made storage space for hanging clothes more than adequate. An additional single closet with a small safe, 2 shelves and 6 drawers greatly increased the storage space. Other amenities in the room included complimentary use of bathrobes and a direct dial telephone with voice mail. In the bathroom, a large storage area under the sink and two glass triangular corner shelves made for considerable storage space for toiletry items. The shower area was large with a convenient wall-mounted shampoo dispenser. Located above the bathroom counter was a wall-mounted body lotion dispenser and wall-mounted hair dryer. A crystal-look covered container was refilled daily with cotton balls and cotton swabs. Our stateroom aboard the Millennium was smaller by 21 square feet than our stateroom aboard the Constellation. Fortunately, this size difference was accomplished by using the extra space we had at the veranda end of our room on the Constellation rather than by taking space away from the bathroom size or closet area. The smaller square footage of our Millennium stateroom was barely noticeable. The more noticeable difference in the room sizes was a decrease in the desk space (top and shelf storage areas). Also, there was no floor to ceiling shelf unit next to the desk as was on the Constellation. In order to avoid disappointment regarding your stateroom size, you should ask your travel agent for the actual measurements (not just the square footage) of the room in which you are booked, keeping in mind that this size includes the bathroom and closet space. Later when you are home, measure off an area by which to judge the room size. If you feel this area is going to be too small for your needs during your cruise, buy up to a larger stateroom before getting on the ship as there may be no availability in the larger stateroom categories once you are onboard. On embarkation day on the Millennium, we saw several incidents of guests attempting to upgrade their accommodations solely because they said the room they had purchased was smaller than they expected. Some were disappointed as there was no availability within many categories. Celebrity Cruises continues to have some of the roomiest and most comfortable stateroom afloat. All staterooms no matter what the category, include a direct dial telephone with voice mail, individual safe, hair dryer, Egyptian cotton towels, complimentary use of bathrobes, complimentary 24-hour room service and refrigerator/mini-bar (not complimentary). The 20” interactive television allows guests to play casino video games, book/review shore excursions, order in-room movies ($8.99 each) and order room service. There are also several music channels on the TV including rock, jazz, classical and country. Because the Millennium was the first of the 4 ships built in that class, it has accommodated more passengers and thus is a bit more worn than the others. In our stateroom, a metal plate that should have surrounded one of the electrical outlets was missing, the plastic hooks were broken on our bathroom waste can causing it to open wide enough to hit the toilet stool, and our stateroom carpeting was worn and stained in some areas. Fortunately, staff has worked very hard to maintain the Millennium’s appearance, and overall, it is still one of the nicest looking ships afloat. If you are booking a balcony stateroom, ask your travel agent to try to book you into one of the staterooms that have a larger veranda size than most in the same category. For example, staterooms 6048 and 6053 have largest verandas in Category 2C due to a widening in the hull of the ship. We were in Category 2A, stateroom 8146, and it had a larger veranda than most others in that category. The same is true in each category for those staterooms with a triangular shaped veranda. Although Celebrity Cruises’ reservationists do not have this information and will tell your travel agent that the larger looking verandas on the brochure deck plans are not accurate, believe us when we tell you that on the Millennium, the brochure deck plans are accurate. As part of Celebrity’s “Taste of Luxury”, they have added the Celebrity Concierge Class (Category CC). These staterooms are what were formally Category 1A veranda staterooms on the Sky Deck with plush amenities and priority services being added. Benefits for those guests in the Celebrity Concierge Class include fresh fruit and flowers, personalized stationery, oversized bath towels, priority luggage delivery, extended room service, a Hansgrohe massaging showerhead, and many other extra amenities. Aboard the Millennium, guests could schedule a personal viewing of a Concierge Class stateroom. You should try the Concierge Class if you are one of those people who cruise in nothing less than a veranda stateroom but want to experience a bit of luxury. Public Areas, Activities and Entertainment The essence of the Millennium’s sophisticated elegance lies in her three-deck atrium with its onyx staircase, softly backlit to present a warm welcoming glow. Pillars of soft white drapery surround the staircase. Many of the inside public rooms, as well as small intimate seating areas with great sea views, are located around the atrium’s perimeter on Decks 4 and 5. The shore excursion desk, guest relations desk and onboard bank are centrally located on Deck 3. Six glass elevators just off of the atrium provide oceanviews as you move from deck to deck. Many of the atrium perimeter rooms have glass walls looking out onto the atrium. The rest of the Millennium radiates out from the atrium area. For such a large ship, the Millennium is beautifully laid out and easy to get around. Almost as surprising, we seldom encountered long lines or congestion. One of our favorite stops in the atrium area was the Cova Cafe di Milano, an area inspired by the outdoor Italian cafés. Coffees, lattés, and cappuccino are served to guests at candle-lit tables. Complimentary pastries and snacks are served in the morning and afternoon. Also located in the atrium area is Online@Celebrity, the 24-hour Internet Café. The 20 laptop computers at Online@Celebrity are configured in such a way as to provide some privacy for each user. The only time the Internet café is closed for general use is during computer classes conducted for guests who wish to sign up. The Internet cost of .75 per minute is somewhat higher than we have experienced on other ships, however, packages are available that lower the cost down to .50 per minute. The Millennium’s 11 passenger decks are packed with interesting and fun spots including Cards, the card room located in the atrium area that was extremely busy on our cruse due to a large number of Bridge players; Words, a two-story library; Notes, a music library with individual state-of-the-art listening stations and Apple® iPOD rental for personal use around the ship; a small but very comfortable cinema that shows first run movies; and The Conservatory, a beautiful garden area with its own floral boutique and area for flower arranging demonstrations. The pool area on Deck 10 is very comfortable with a wide walking and sitting area on Deck 11. Deck chairs and space was abundant, even on sea days. The main pool area includes both a shallow and a large pool along with four whirlpools. A glass covered Thalassotherapy pool area just off of the main outdoor pool area was surprisingly seldom crowded. Each afternoon at sea, sunbathers were presented with cold towels, ice water and iced tea. To further heighten the pool experience on the Millennium, at 2:45 p.m., a parade of tuxedo clad assistant waiters paraded and provided sorbets that had a very cooling effect. Celebrity Cruises’ custom-branded AquaSpa(SM) by Elemis is without question one of the best spa programs in the cruise industry. It provides guests with a serene environment where touch, texture and architectural design come together to cleanse and rejuvenate the body, mind and spirit. The 25,000 sq. ft. AquaSpa(SM) facilities include 16 spa treatment rooms, a full service beauty salon and a fully equipped fitness area. The Pilates and Yoga classes are very popular even though a small fee is charged. Activities throughout the daytime and into the early evening include Bingo, a variety of seminars on such subjects as gemstones, health/fitness, flower arranging, and ports of call, many trivia contests and mind-teaser games and a wide variety of sports activities including a full-size basketball court, compact football, ping pong, paddle tennis, volleyball, jogging track, shuffleboard and a state-of-the-art golf simulator. Park West Gallery, an art gallery based in the United States, displays a large collection of art works from world-renowned artists as well as new artists with art auctions being held on several days throughout the cruise. The Emporium, Millennium’s duty-free specialty boutiques that line the corridors of Deck 5, have a large selection of souvenir items as well as jewelry and clothing with most shops having very reasonable prices. An activity that drew a large crowd one evening was a nicely presented fashion show in the atrium, a great three-deck location for such an event. Celebrity Cruises has joined some of the more upscale cruise lines in presenting Enrichment Speakers. Political Analysis, Steve Schier, was on the Millennium and presented several lectures encompassing the presidencies of George W. Bush and Bill Clinton. Children, what children? In spite of the fact that they were seldom seen or heard, there were a large number of children on our cruise. The programs for children and young adults aboard the Millennium are well organized and seemed to be enjoyed by the children (as well as their parents). There is a teen club, The Tower, along with an area for the younger children, the Fun Factory. There are 10 lounges/bars aboard the Millennium, each with its own distinct style and some serving specialty drinks, such as the Martini Bar and the Champagne Bar. Michael’s Club, at one time a cigar bar, is now a piano club. Throughout the ship we found numerous lounges/bars tucked away with a large variety of seating arrangements ranging from areas that could accommodate a large party to areas where two people could quietly talk. Two of our favorites were the Ocean Café Bar, a small outdoor but covered bar on Deck 10 aft, and Cosmos Nightclub (and Disco), a lounge on Deck 11 forward with panoramic views and lighting over one of the dance floors that slowly changes colors. Other lounges/bars aboard the Millennium include the Mast Bar, Riviera Pool Bar, Rendez-Vous Lounge, Fortunes Casino Bar and the Extreme Sports Bar. Starting early each evening and continuing late into the night, a wide variety of live music ranging from piano to guitar, from harp to string quartets can be found in the lounges and atrium area. We especially enjoyed the acapella singing group “Sea Tones” consisting of four young men who sang songs that took us all down memory lane. In addition to the large selection of live musical acts, a very funny late night comedy/juggling act was presented by Thien Fu, and of course, there was the late night disco. The Celebrity Theater, the main show lounge aboard the Millennium, is designed exactly like that aboard the Constellation and, again, is one of the best planned show lounges we have seen. The main area and stage is on Deck 4 with more veranda seating on Deck 5. Seating is angled down to the stage in such a way as to make for clear viewing from almost anywhere in the theater. The production shows presented by the Celebrity Singers and Dancers were outstanding. Our favorite was “Classique: A Musical Odyssey”, a musical review with several different styles including classical and pop. Dru Pavlov, Cruise Director, performs the undaunting job of overseeing all onboard activities on the Millennium. He is a marvelously talented gentleman who has a knack for putting guests at ease and seems to be able to be in three places at once. During a private meeting with Mr. Pavlov, we asked about the production company used aboard the Millennium. Mr. Pavlov stated that Celebrity is beginning to have their own production company to produce their stage shows in-house. They have found that land-based production companies tend to produce shows that are geared for land-based audiences. By producing their shows in-house, the shows are geared to cruise guests. Two of the Millennium’s “Taste of Luxury” concepts are worth special mention. “Elegant Tea” was served on two occasions during our cruise, once in the Metropolitan Restaurant for all guests and once in the Olympic Restaurant for Captain’s Club members. It was a jacket required activity with all the pomp and circumstance of high tea on the ultra-luxury cruise lines. The other “Taste of Luxury” was Davanti, a boutique in which you can be fitted for custom-made clothing. Dining Celebrity Cruises has a well-deserved sterling reputation in the area of dining, and our experience on the Millennium only served to further reinforce this. Celebrity continues to offer both assigned meal seatings and a variety of alternative dining options. Under the guidance of Master Chef Michel Roux (who happened to be on the Millennium during our cruise), Celebrity’s culinary delights are made from scratch and seasoned with fresh herbs. The Millennium shines when it comes to food quality, presentation, variety and service. The ultimate dining experience aboard the Millennium is the Olympic Restaurant. It is named after the White Star Line luxury liner RMS Olympic that entered service in 1911 and was a sister-ship to the ill-fated Titanic. Original panels from the RMS Olympic displayed in the Olympic Restaurant are a feast for the eyes. Reservations are required and should be made early in the cruise as limited seating does not allow for all guests to partake in this experience during a 7-night cruise. Even with a $25.00 per person charge, we strongly encourage you to try this elegant dining experience. The service, lead by the Maitre d' Dominique but with an entire team of waiters and much tableside preparation, makes for an unforgettable evening. The Metropolitan Restaurant, the main dining room that accommodates two assigned meal seatings, is a two-story (Decks 4 and 5) masterpiece with a gorgeous aft view. Evening meals are exceptional and are enhanced by live music. The Casual Dining Boulevard on Deck 10 encompasses several areas and provides a variety of food options during the majority of the day and evening. The Ocean Café has breakfast and lunch buffets that include omelet and pasta/sandwich stations along with theme lunch buffets of Oriental, Mexican and Italian food. During the evening, the Ocean Café becomes a casual dining alternative complete with waiters and white tablecloths. Reservations are suggested, and there is a $2.00 per person charge. Guests choose from a several course menu. Although the menu selection is not as extensive as in the Metropolitan Restaurant, the food quality, presentation and service are still top notch. According to Sharon, the lasagna she had one evening at the Ocean Café was the best she has ever tasted. Other food options available at the Casual Dining Boulevard are a pizza/baked pasta station, soup and salad buffet, Sushi Café, and an ice cream station. Because we used the pool almost daily during our cruise, we became very familiar with the Riviera Grill located on Deck 10 next to the pool area. That wonderful scent of outdoor grilling lured us to the delicious burgers, hot dogs and French fries on several occasions. Pizza was also available at the Riviera Grill. The location is great as it is close to the Ocean Café if you prefer to dine indoors. For the more health conscious guests, the Spa Café located in the Thalassotherapy area offers healthy spa-inspired foods such as healthy breakfasts and light meals, including smoothies. The Spa Café is located in a low traffic area and was often less busy than other dining areas. Let’s not forget the 24-hour room service! The breakfast menu aboard the Millennium includes a variety of choices for a full breakfast, including omelets. If you make your breakfast room service order by phone or by leaving the order card on the outside of your door at night (rather than by ordering via your interactive TV), we found that you could make additions and enhancements to you order. For example, we asked for items such as fruit yogurt, bananas, and ham and cheese omelets (rather than plain omelets ). Each of our requests was honored with no hesitation. Lunch and dinner room service choices range from pasta and sandwiches to steak. We received all of our room service orders promptly and with a pre-notification telephone call to let us know that our order was on its way to our room. Do you know about Celebrity Cruises’ Celebrity Escape(SM)? Celebrity EscapeSM are Celebrity’s cruises exclusively for guests over the age of 21. They are for parents who need a vacation from parenting and for guests who like to cruise without children on board. These cruises include extended hours for the pool and the AquaSpaSM, late night comedy acts including an adult themed show, a romantic Valentine's Night at sea and an enhanced room service breakfast menu. Do you know about Celebrity Cruises’ Captain’s Club Membership? One of the best cruise past passenger clubs is the Captain’s Club. The Captain’s Club membership is now free as opposed to the former $35.00 membership fee. There are three levels to the club based on the amount of sailed cruises, Classic Member, Select Member and Elite Member. Each level adds rewards and benefits. Priority boarding, complimentary wine tasting and one-category upgrades are just a few of the benefits. A welcome packet and invitations to various private events are delivered to your stateroom throughout your cruise. If you have cruised with Celebrity Cruises before and are not a member of the Captain’s Club, join now. It will enhance your next cruise aboard Celebrity Cruises.
