Celebrity Soltice sailing

cruise to nowhere - 11/2008

The Celebrity Soltice is a classy lady

I just recenlty returned from a cruise aboard the Celebrity Soltice sailing from Ft. Lauderdale.

The Soltice is very impressive when you approach her berthed in Port Everglades with all the balconies.
Note, for those of you that do not know, Celebrity no longer
allows smoking in the cabins or on the verandahs.
Smoking is only allowed in the Penny Slot machine area in the casino, Deck 12 pool area Portside only and on Deck 13 above the pool area. If you are not in those areas don't smoke.

We arrived at the Port approximately 12PM and Boarding went very smooothly.  But there is a major incline from the Terminal to the ship. Anyone bringing carry-on luggage or even wheeled luggage will be exhausted by the time they reach the deck.   When we entered the ship we were advised cabins were not going to be available until 2PM.
I asked if we could drop off the luggage in the cabin and
immediately a young man appeared with white gloves and
took the luggage I had been transporting and showed us to our cabin.   Our cabin was a 2C on deck 6 and the life boat was directly outside a window. (Could have jumped right in from the verandah, if needed.)

Cabin  seemed much smaller than 192 sq ft which is what shows in the brochure.  (the beds are circular at the end to give more walk room, but still difficult to maneuver luggage around  and closet space would be limited if cruise was longer than 7 nights.)  Bathroom was adequate, but
there was a trick to getting the light on in the bathroom without turning the lights on in the cabin.  Never did master that trick.

The public rooms were from ok to wow.
Starting with the Soltice Theater, Plaza Deck.  Very well designed  with stadium style seating, but it has pillars in areas that block your views.

Grand Epernay Dining Room is located on both Plaza and Promenade Deck has a mixture of Old World charm with Danish modern furniture. We had dinner here the 2nd night and did find it noise level at a peak.

On Promenade Deck the shops on the Boulevard are like being in shops at a 5 Star hotels.  Very impressive.   The Wine Cellar (very nice),  The Fortunes Casino, there was Roulette, Craps, Poker tables,(Texas Hold'em, Black Jack, Caribbean Poker, 3 Card Poker) and the minimum was $5.00 and $10.00 depending on the table, as well as slot machines from .01 to $5.00.  Martini Bar (not as impressive as I thought it would be) Iced over bar area .

The Tuscan Grill - lovely open atmosphere overlooking the stern of the ship.  Murano's small, intimate atmosphere, very nicely appointed.  Before arriving at either of the these restaurants is the charming Ensemble lounge/bar.  Very nicely appointed in creams and purple, very regal. The foyer you pass thru to the Ensemble lounge was very dark with floral wallpaper and the tiles in the floor actually had ants traveling towards the floral arrangements on the wall. (no not real ants)   Micheals Club very European, quiet and intimate.

Going toward mid-ship on the Entertainment Deck we have
Cafe al Bacho and Gelateria, coffees, crepes, a bakery (with the best chocolate chip cookies ever) and the Bistro on Five, a quaint little restaurant.

Also on Entertainment Deck is the Art Gallery, very impressive.   Everywhere on this deck the vases and art pieces were displayed. More shops.

Continuing on an upward spiral we arrive on Resort Deck
which is where we find the Spa.  Very Impressed!
State of the Art equipment, many small private rooms for
massages and treatments.  The Solarium  Pool was very
relaxing and magical with the incense that was permeating throughout the area,  the pool has steps down into the water as well as the standard ladders.  Next to the pool is a fountain that lights up at night and responds to music.  The outside pool area is similar.   If I remember there were 2 Jacuzzi's in the Solarium area and 4 Jacuzzi's in the outdoor pool area. (though when were aboard the only Jacuzzi's available were in the Solarium, others were not ready for use).

Sky Deck forward was the Observation Lounge.  Similar in style to the Viking Crown Lounges on RCCL, but very sterile.  Maybe at night it  would be different, but in day light, not impressive.

Aft on Sky Deck is the Oceanview Cafe.   Very well designed with kiosks set up throughout the area, so there was never a wait.  Except maybe for the Pizza. Just kidding! Good selection, Good service.

Last, but not least we go to the Lawn Club on Deck 15.

Yes, it is truly the real thing, green grass.  Area wasn't really being used other than people taking off there shoes and walking on the grass.

Adjacent to the Lawn Club is the Hot Glass Show.

How very educational and impressive.   Corning Master Glass Blowers did several demonstrations during the 2 days we were onboard.   The first demonstration was the creation of a conch shell.   It took 45 minutes to an hour to create from start to finish.  Another demonstration was a vase,  multi colored showing all the steps involved to get to the final product.

The ship all in all was quite lovely, but I don't think it is for
the guest who wants night life and party atmosphere.

It definitely is for the mature, well traveled guest.
The Penthouse Suite guest might never come out of the suite for the duration of the cruise.   Sooooo impressive.
The bath area was as large as my verandah stateroom and has a seperate walk-in shower and tub. Lovely dining area for at least 6. Private whirlpool on the deck outside the bedroom area was definitely a plus. Very beautifully appointed.

The morning we disembarked breakfast was available in many different areas. Not Continental Breakfast, but the standard buffet for breakfast.
Even the bakery and the Specialty coffee areas were open.

We left the vessel at 930 am and by the time we got to our
car it was 945 am.  We elected not to Park in the Garage  which was around the other side of the Port from Berth 18.

Remember it is important to advise your client, that the incline from the cruise terminal to the deck for which you enter the ship is very steep. Carry as little as possible onboard.   Pulling a suitcase up the incline was a challenge.

I appreciate the opportunity to have sailed on the Soltice. All in all the ship is really quite lovely, but for me it was not a WOW!    In talking with other agents onboard from all over the U.S., as well as Canada and Europe, the consensus was the same.

Pros: Very easy to get around. No hidden corners.

Cons: Boarding the steep incline to the ship.

Millennium

Eastern Caribbean - 2/2007

Still at the top of their game for service.

Millennium still has the best specialty dinning I've had on any cruise ship.  However, they could use a few new itineraries.  It's the same old destinations out of Ft. Lauderdale year after year.  The ship is also showing some wear and tear, such as a few missing tiles around the pool, etc.  Celebrity's service to their passengers is alway the best, as is the entertainment night after night.

Pros: Best specialty dinning and service in all categories

Cons: Itineraries.

Galaxy Panama Canal

- 1/2005

I was fortunate enough to sail on the Galaxy to the Panama Canal. This was a 12 night cruise with stops in Jamaica, Mexico, Grand Cayman Costa Rica and the beautiful Panama Canal.

This was not my first cruise, so as an experienced cruiser I was expecting a lot.  And I got it.  She was marvelous.  Her staterooms were spotless as well as all the public areas. The staff was beyond good.  The ratio is about 2 to 1 and it showed.

The food was very French, which I enjoyed.  The shows in the evenings were above standard.

When I sailed on her she was due for refurbishing but it was hard to complain about minor problems.  The crew kept the ship spotless and were so attentive to your every need.

I have since sailed on two other Celebrity ships but the Galaxy will always be my favorite.

Around Cape Horn on Celebrity's Infinity

- /

Bigger ships ride the waves better in the rough seas around Cape Horn at the tip of South America. Celebrity gives great value for higher end cruising.

We traveled around Cape Horn on Infinity which was one of the larger ships sailing in this destination. A Millennium-class vessel at 91,000 tons she was triple the size of another ship that was shadowing us (that I'd sailed on also in Scandinavia--Norwegian Crown; a nice little but older ship).  You could tell that the Crown was having a rougher time in those waters: her bow would  disappear below the crest of the waves and reappear high above the crest. But then she didn't have the modern stabilizers that most ships of the last 10 years or so have.

On the other hand, our Infinity was riding the waves with only nominal "rocking & rolling" ...it was noticeable, we'd walk in the usual zig zag fashion but I saw no one having trouble with it. After seeing the movies with old sailing ships struggling through these infamous waters, I think I would have been disappointed if we got to Cape Horn and had it smooth as glass!

Infinity is a wonderful ship with fewer than 2000 people on board, she's about 25% larger than ships that carry 30% more people. For people that want a step up, or for high end cruisers who want 90% the cruise value of the top end (in my opinion) for 50% the cost, Celebrity is an incredible value.

Pros: Stable, smooth cruising with excellent features.

Cons: If you like intimate and small; it's nearly intimate but certainly not small.
